Issue summary:
From 4:45 p.m. PDT to 5:33 p.m. PDT, customers were not able to connect to Slack.
Slack's server infrastructure scales up every day to handle volume in North America by increasing the size of the server pool available to handle requests. Some of these servers did not successfully register with our load balancing infrastructure during this process of scaling up, and this ultimately led to a decline in the health of the server pool over time.
We resolved the customer-facing impact of this problem by provisioning and registering a new fleet of servers with our load balancer. Once this was done, we refreshed the list of servers registered with the load balancer to ensure that unhealthy servers were no longer receiving traffic.
We are conducting our standard postmortem process on this incident to ensure that we fully understand what went wrong and what steps we can take to prevent a recurrence. The output of this process is a Root Cause Analysis (RCA) report. Customers can contact us at feedback@slack.com to request a copy of this RCA, which we will send once the postmortem process is complete.

When Slack came along, there were no real competitors in the market. That’s not to say there weren’t other chat apps, but Slack combined an intuitive UI with both group and person-to-person messaging. It also allows companies to have a measure of control over who can use it through the invitation system.

  • To update Slack on a Mac, iPhone, or Android device, you'll need to go through your system's App Store. The browser version of Slack never needs to manually update, as it will load the most recent.
  • Open Slack (desktop or UWP) and press Ctrl + Comma key (“,”) to open up the Preferences menu. Then, click on Notifications and scroll down to the Do Not Disturb section. Now, depending on what you’re after, you can either disable or modify the Do Not Disturb feature to reflect your needs.
  • Corrupt Slack Installation files in Windows: If you have installed Slack through Windows store, there are chances that the installation files are corrupt or missing essential components. Try clearing Windows Store Cache and Reinstalling.
